Working on the ground in Costa Rica gave me incredible insight into how people in remote areas live without many of the daily luxuries that we take for granted. I gained skills in communication, project planning, and creative thinking. I also was able to see how successful the effort to empower the women through economic opportunity was, the craftswomen were enthusiastic and incredibly talented. The friendships I made and the experiences I had while on the ground in Perez Zeledon will stay with me forever. Staying in the community in Costa Rica gave me the perspective necessary to help remotely as well. I enjoy working for a positive cause, and UpTica is definitely doing good in the world.
My work with UpTica has truly been a highlight of my college career; I've been able to travel to Costa Rica and meet with the communities and individual families our nonprofit is benefitting, I've seen the deep impact UpTica has had on the campus community through the numerous research presentations we have given, and I've made some of the closest friends I'll ever have
Getting involved with this project, and seeing how I have been able to help shape its growing success has emboldened me to follow my instincts in how I can be part of sustainable action. This gives me hope for the future of sustainability, and also in my own ability to make a change
